The thing is, Jen hates cats.
She doesn’t remember when the hatred started but she always cringes everytime she sees a cat. There was one time when she was supposed to meet Gio at a coffee shop to discuss about their class project, but after waiting for forty minutes Jen didn’t show up and Gio had to call her, not pleased.
“Where are you?!” He spoke right after Jen picked up the phone.
“There’s a cat in front of the apartment building’s door.”
“What?! Jen don’t be childish, just come here immediately!” Gio groaned.
“I can’t. The stupid cat won’t move.”
Gio swore he could’ve exploded in that shop in front of everyone else if he didn’t have shame.
“You are unbelievable.” He sighed.“Don’t go anywhere, I’m coming over your place.”
“I won’t. Ok see ya.”
Things always get complicated everytime it involves Jen and cats. So when Gio comes into her apartment with a big paper bag and a little cat on his hand, Jen gasps, cringes and shoves herself to the corner of the room in horror.
“What the hell are you thinking?” She whines. Eyes widen when the little cat who looks like a ball of fur crawls onto her sofa. “Put that thing away from my couch!”
Gio laughs and brings the cat close to his face. “Relax Jen. It’s still a little kitty, my aunt just gave me after her cat gave birth. He brings no harm.” He lightly kisses its nose.
“Eww, gross.” Jen cringes.
“And ‘that thing’ has a name.” Gio ingores Jen’s disgusted look on his face. “Cat.”
“What?”
“His name is Cat.” Gio repeats.
Jen snorts and sits on the floor hugging her knees. “You named your cat, Cat?”
“Yup.”
“Isn’t that stupid?”
Gio rolls his eyes and puts the cat down. “Whatever.”
Jen feels her body stiffen when the small grey cat starts walking toward his direction. Moving its tail slowly. Gio knows Jen will freak out and he somehow enjoys teasing her, so he decides to watch with an amused smile tugging on his lips.
When Jen realizes Gio doesn’t anything, she yells. “What are you doing? That cat is approaching me!” She springs up to her feet and marches towards the dining table.
Gio laughs and takes the cat back into his arms. Stroking his fur while sitting down on the couch.
“If you’re done showing off your new kitty cat, please take your leave.” Jen says, sitting on the chair. Hand propping up her head. Eyes glaring at the innocent little cat who’s sitting on Gio’s lap, seems like enjoying Gio’s touch.
“Oh, of course I’ll leave soon.” Gio chuckles, putting the cat down and walks to sit in front of Jen, watching him gets up and takes a glass of water.
“You know Luna, that girl from our history class, who sits two rows in front of us?”
Jen scoffs and sits back on the chair. “Yeah how can I not know when you obviously have a crush on her and always talking her about like.. 24/7? I’m done with it if you just want to talk about how pretty her hair moves when the wind blows or when she laughs or what about how funny your face looked when she ignored you?”
Gio smiles widely and claps his hands. “Well, Ms. I-won’t-fall-in-love-I-have-to-graduate-first, here’s the plot twist. I asked her out yesterday and she said yes! We’re going on a date!” He grins, remembering how Jen used to say ‘I have to focus on my studies’ whenever a guy seemed to take interest on her, which Gio thinks is the stupidest thing ever like why waste your time in studying only if you can go both studying and dating.
“So your point of coming here is just to show off your new kitty cat and your new girlfriend? Wow how fascinating.” Jen rolls her eyes and takes a sip of her water.
“Ttaeng! Wrong! My point is, I will have a date tonight and I need you to look after Cat, just until 10 pm!” Gio wriggles his eyebrows.
Jen chokes on her water and glares at Gio in disbelief then to the cat and to Gio again. “You want me to babysit that cat??” She points the cat who’s walking around her living room.
“Well, you can call it babysit if you want. But you don’t have to do anything! I already bring his food and box of sand. So you can enjoy your night like you always do.” Gio glances at the paper bag beside the couch.
“What? No way!” Jen shakes her head, her hazelnut brown hair swaying.
“Please~?” Gio pouts.
“Did you hit your head on the way here? Or are you high?”
Gio pouts again and stares right into Jen’s deep brown orbs. “Come one, please~ this is the first time and the last time I ask you to take care of Cat. Please!”
Jen groans and runs her fingers through her hair. “You know I hate cats!”
Gio frowns. “And you know I like Luna.” He leans in, his expression becomes serious. “This is what I’ve been waiting for. You also know that.”
“But why me? Why not Noah? He’s your roommate! Or Alta?” She sighs.
“Please, please, please? You’re my super cool best friend! Noah is out to only God knows where, so it’s dangerous to leave Cat alone in my place. He’s still a baby, he could get into trouble and there’s no one to help him! Alta won’t even bother get up from the bed and open the door, you know him, lazy head.” Gio puffs out his cheeks and puts the saddest face on.
Jen rubs her face with her hands and mentally cursing herself for opening the door for the super annoying Gio. But he’s still her best friend and he’s done so much for her so she heaves a deep sigh, gives in. “You.. are unbelievable.”
“And you are a super nice best friend.” A big smile spreads on Gio’s face then he gets up to put his shoes on.
“Whoa.. You’re leaving now?”
“Yeah I’m gonna pick Luna up at seven and it’s already six.” Gio strokes the cat for the last time and walks towards the door.
“You better be back! Or you might not see Cat tomorrow.” Jen warns him with both arms crossed.
Gio chuckles. “Wow alright, alright. Thanks Jen. You’re indeed the best.” He opens the door and before he disappear, he winks. “Have a good night.”
Jen sighs to herself. “More like a hell night.” She turns her head, stares at the cat who’s now rolling around innocently on her couch.
If her stare could burn things, Jen swears Gio would kill her because Cat would already turn to ashes by the time he comes back.
